Iron Edison Batteries
*************************

Iron Edison batteries Iron Edison BatteriesOver a century ago, Thomas Edison found a battery design that he considered to be nearly perfect. Today, Iron Edison is proud to offer an updated version of this incredible design that is specifically manufactured for renewable energy systems. Iron Edison carries a variety of nickel iron batteries: 12 volt, 24 volt, and 48 volt configurations, each configuration with amp-hour capacities of 100 Ah through 1000 Ah.

Comparing a Nickel Iron battery with a lead acid or AGM battery:
Depth of discharge vs. cycle life - Nickel Iron batteries get 11,000 cycles at their recommended 80% depth of discharge. If you cycle the battery once per day, the battery will last over 30 years (11,000/365=30.14), and extending the battery’s life even past the 30-year time frame is possible by refreshing the electrolyte in the battery. Lead acid or AGM batteries typically get 1,500-2,000 cycles at 30% depth of discharge. Cycling this battery once per day would result in a battery life of ~4-5.5 years.

Sizing a Nickel Iron (NiFe) battery as opposed to lead acid or AGM batteries:
Total battery capacity vs. actual battery capacity - Nickel Iron batteries have an 80% recommended depth of discharge, while lead acid or AGM batteries are typically discharged somewhere between 25% and 50%. The battery’s total capacity is determined by simply multiplying the battery’s voltage by its amp-hour capacity. The battery’s actual capacity is influenced by its depth of discharge.
For example, a 12V 300Ah NiFe battery has a total battery capacity of 3.6 kiloWatt-hrs (12*300/1000), and an actual capacity of 2.88 kWhs at 80% depth of discharge (3.6*0.8).
A 12V 300Ah lead acid battery has a total capacity of 3.6 kWhs, and an actual capacity of 1.08 kWhs at 30% depth of discharge.

Nickel Iron:
Optimal charge & discharge rate = C/4
Ex: 48V 100Ah battery should not be expected to provide more than 1,200 Watts of instantaneous power to the loads (100 / 4 = 25 Amps DC; 25 A x 48 V = 1,200 W).
48V 100Ah battery should get 20-25 Amps DC instantaneous for battery charging.
Optimal Depth of Discharge = 80%
Ex: 48V 100Ah battery has 3.84 kWh of usable energy storage capacity (48V x 100Ah x 0.8 = 3,840 Watt-hrs).
